Below is a list of characteristics
that are common to a batterer.
Presents themselves as the "real victim".
Says they are trying to keep the family together.
Acknowledges family problems but denies the violence.
When confronted by his acts of assault, he may say things such as "She bruises easily; she was hysterical; she was drunk or high".
May claim to having had to restrain her.
May claim to have been defending himself.
May claim that is was an accident.
May make or threaten to make multiple Child Protective Services reports claiming her negligence as a mother.
May prosecute or threaten to prosecute her when she has acted in self-defense.
May assert that he knows people in the criminal justice system and that she will not be helped or believed.
Batterer's reality is:
"I'm not doing anything wrong;
If I am, I won't get caught;
If I do get caught, I'll talk my way out of it;
If I can't talk my way out,
the consequences will be light".
Join a support group where you will find help and someone who truly understands
